FAQ

Who is the Australian Institute of Accreditation?

What a great question! The Australian Institute of Accreditation is an education technology company dedicated to providing innovative accredited Vocational Education and Training (VET) solutions, especially regarding the delivery of online Food Safety training. We are also a nationally registered training organisation (RTO), ID # 45009. We have worked closely with major national retail fast food businesses and bring a wide range of industry experience to the development of our exceptional food safety courses.

We combine our knowledge of producing powerful software solutions with a deep understanding of how people learn to develop industry leading online food safety programs. We partner with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to provide national accreditation for the courses that we deliver.

What’s the difference between a Food Handler and a Food Safety Supervisor?

Food Safety Supervisors need to undertake more comprehensive food safety training than Food Handlers. Food Safety Supervisors require Level 1 and Level 2 training whereas Food Handlers only need Level 1 training (or its equivalent). Both types of training can be undertaken through online courses. Both are accredited courses and require that you are observed completing certain practical tasks in the workplace.

In Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, there are laws that state that at least one person from every food business must be nominated as Food safety Supervisor, in order to allow the business to trade legally.

What is the difference between the Food Safety Supervisor and Food Safety Supervisor (Retail) courses?

Food Safety Supervisor qualifications in Australia are industry specific. Both of these courses are nationally recognised as meeting the requirements for a person to be regarded as a Food Safety Supervisor. The food sector your business falls into will guide which courses you may choose to complete to ensure training is relevant to your business. Typical retail businesses include supermarkets, convenience stores, grocers, and delicatessens. Typical hospitality businesses include restaurants, cafes and hotels, where Take away and fast food businesses are generally considered either retail or hospitality food businesses.

For the Food Safety Supervisor (Hospitality) course, you will be awarded two units of competency on your SOA, SITXFSA005 Use hygiene practices for food safety and SITXFSA006 Participate in safe food handling practices. For the Food Safety Supervisor (Retail) course, you will be awarded one unit of competency, SIRRFSA001 – Handle food safely in a retail environment

What happens after I have paid for my course online?

Once payment has been received, your online login instructions and receipt of payment will be immediately sent to you via email and you can start your course at any time (GST is not charged for accredited training courses in Australia). Should you have any questions regarding how to access your course, please contact us.

Why do I need a Workplace Observation Report and who completes it?

One of the rules we need to meet in order to provide nationally recognised certificates and qualifications, is that students are required to be observed completing practical job tasks, relevant to the certificate that they are completing. To make it easy on you, rather than request you to come into a classroom or for specific tasks to be completed at work, captured on video and uploaded (which is sometimes hard to do in the workplace because of privacy laws), we have developed a unique, 100% online Workplace Observation Report. This simple online checklist can be sent from directly within your course to whoever you choose.

All you need to do is supply a name and email address of someone in your workplace that you have been working alongside who is in the position to make valid comments on your performance, with no more for you to do. The person you nominate should have at least 12 months experience in food service and preparation, or be a supervisor/team leader/manager of a food establishment. They do not need to hold a food safety qualification themselves to complete the report.

If you are not currently working in the industry and you do not have access to an operational commercial kitchen, you might consider volunteering for some shifts in your local area at a cafe, bar, restaurant deli etc to complete this workplace observation component. Alternatively, if you have worked in a food business previously, then you may want to consider contacting your previous employer or a suitable work colleague who can complete the report based on their past observations.

Can I do my Workplace Observation in a home kitchen?

No, sorry, but under current government regulations the Workplace Observation step must be demonstrated in an operational food preparation or service environment, that being an industry workplace or industry-realistic simulated environment. This does not include a home kitchen (even if it is to be used for commercial purposes).

Can International Students Enroll In This Course?

No. AIA is not an approved CRICOS provider. International Students on a subclass 500 study visa will need to apply to a CRICOS approved provider.

What is the approximate time it takes to complete the courses?

All of our courses are designed to be accessed anytime, anywhere and suit how you like to learn. The length of each course will vary on the individual, depending on your prior knowledge and how you learn. In general, it takes approximately 2-3 hours to complete each of the Food Handling Certificate courses, and on average, about 3-4 hours to complete the Food Safety Supervisor courses theory sessions. The time to complete assessment and practical elements varies depending on your knowledge and availability to perform your workplace observation steps.

You do not need to complete the course in the same day, or in one long session. You can space it out to suit how you like to learn. If you are looking to fast track your learning though, it is not uncommon for people to sign up and complete in the same day. We allow you 8 weeks to complete your course, so there is no need to rush.

In which states and territories will my Statement of Attainment be recognised?

If you complete an accredited course with us, you will receive a Statement of Attainment that is recognised across all states and territories of Australia. We also are an approved provider of the NSW government Food Safety Supervisor certificates which you will require if you want to work as a Food Safety Supervisor in New South Wales.

When will I receive my Statement of Attainment?

Once you have successfully completed your entire course, we will send out your hard copy Statement of Attainment to you in the post the next business days after your date of completion. Please note, that any unclaimed certificates that are returned to us by Australia Post are available to be resent to you for a $20 postage and handling fee.

Food Knowledge At your fingertips

For any business that serves food, it’s a legal requirement to nominate a Food Safety Supervisor. These regulations are in place to ensure your staff have the relevant skills and knowledge to safely handle food within their roles.

At the Australian Institute of Accreditation, our Food Safety Supervisor certification is designed to help your designated supervisor understand the requirements for handling food safely, while knowing how to manage other staff to do the same.

For the nominated Food Safety Supervisors in your venue, this course will help them learn how to best manage food safety in the kitchen, to ensure strict procedures are in order to serve food that’s safe to eat.

Whether you’re a waiter, a restaurant manager, or a head chef, our Food Safety Supervisor course can provide anyone in the hospitality industry with crucial knowledge that is directly transferable to their workplace.

We’re Approved to Issue the NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificate

IMPORTANT FOR NSW STUDENTS: In order to operate as a Food Safety Supervisor within New South Wales, it’s required to gain an accredited certificate from the NSW Food Authority. But with our NSW AIA-approved course, you can access a course that’s been specifically set up to meet all requirements by the NSW Food Authority.

Compared to other certifications, we keep our courses low in cost. On top of the standard course fee of $99, you can get your NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificate for just an additional cost of $39.50.

$30 is the price the government charges to provide the certificate, plus $9.50 for printing, postage, and handling costs. This will be listed under "Optional extras you may wish to consider" after you select to enrol in this course.

In 2015, the NSW Food Authority announced some additional requirements for NSW Food Safety Supervisor training. Currently, there are four key focus areas determined by the Food Authority. If you are seeking an NSW FSS certificate, you must complete the four key focus areas:

  • Allergen Management
  • Safe Egg Handling
  • Cleaning and Sanitising Practices
  • Food Act Offences

Students in other states and territories, such as those seeking an accredited Food Safety Certificate in WA, do not require any additional certificates as the Statement of Attainment gained in this course is all that is required to operate as a Food Safety Supervisor in these locations.

Assessment Requirements to Complete Our Online Course

Performance Evidence Video Submission assessment requirements:
This provides direct evidence that demonstrates your practical skills in an operational food preparation environment. You will submit your assessments (directly to the course page) by recording yourself completing several straightforward examples of Food Safety in short, 2-minute smartphone videos, or set up a Zoom with one of our trainers to quickly demonstrate your skills live in less than 20 minutes.

Videos will need to be recorded in an operational food preparation environment or industry workplace.

Third Party Observation Report assessment requirements:

This provides supplementary evidence to further demonstrate your practical skills in an operational food preparation environment.

You must have a (recent past or present) nominated observer, with at least 18 months industry experience (e.g. a boss, supervisor, or co-worker) willing to complete an electronic observation report on your behalf.

Please note: If you are looking to start your own business (e.g. at-home cake making or a food truck) and you have no current food industry experience, or do not have anyone who can act as your third-party observer, then our course is not for you. In this situation, we would recommend you research a reputable company with whom you can complete a face-to-face food safety course. This way, you can complete simulated activities in a suitably resourced training space and be observed by a qualified trainer.

This includes a 2-minute smartphone video, or set up a Zoom with one of our trainers to quickly demonstrate your skills live in less than 20 minutes!

This course is the minimum requirement by most state and territory governments and/or councils where the business requires a certified Food Safety Supervisor. Our specially designed course provides everything you need to ensure compliance with your food business in your location.

If you want to be a Food Safety Supervisor in QLD, this course is perfect for you, and the statement of attainment is recognised Australia-wide. We are also accredited by the NSW Food Authority to deliver Food Safety Supervisor certificates in the state of NSW.

If you already hold a Statement of Attainment issued by our company for unit SITXFSA101 (superseded), SITXFSA001 (superseded), or SITXFSA005, then you just need to complete SITXFSA006, which is the unit covered in the Food Handling Certificate online course (Level 2)

Upon successful completion, you will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for the single unit, where the two units together are recognised as being the units of competency required to be recognised as a Food Safety Supervisor. If you want to complete a NSW FSS refresher program, please contact us by phone to discuss.

Have a look at our ‘Terms and Conditions and forms’ section to review our Student Handbook, which has excellent information you may like to review before deciding on a course, including what Language, Literacy and Numeracy Support we offer.

Crucial Information for NSW Food Safety Certificates

NSW Legislation

In NSW, food safety requirements are set by the Food Act 2003 (NSW) and the Food Regulation 2015 (NSW). These Acts require that food sold in NSW is safe and suitable for human consumption and meets all standards set out in the Food Standards Code.

Food Safety in New South Wales is governed by the NSW Food Authority, which comes under the Department of Primary Industries. Together with NSW Health, the NSW Food Authority monitors food safety across the whole state. They make sure the food produced and sold in NSW meets all of the guidelines set out in the relevant state-based legislation.

Regulating & monitoring food safety in NSW

The NSW Food Authority is responsible for regulating and monitoring food safety across the entire NSW food industry.

Food safety training requirements

One of the key requirements in the NSW Food Act relates to food safety training. Every food business must have at least one designated Food Safety Supervisor per premises. This person is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day implementation of food safety in the workplace and must be trained in the right way.

Food Safety Supervisor training

The Australian Institute of Accreditation has been approved by the NSW Food Authority to deliver NSW-specific Food Safety Supervisor training, and the requirements are covered in our courses. This includes three key areas:

  1. Safe Egg Handling
    2. Allergen Management
    3. Cleaning and Sanitising Practices

When you complete training with the Australian Institute of Accreditation, we’ll provide you with a NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificate (sometimes known as the ‘Purple Certificate’) on behalf of the NSW Food Authority. This must be displayed in the food business. It is an additional cost of $30 + postage and handling.

NSW Recertification or Renewal

Once you receive your Food Safety Supervisor qualification, the certificate is valid for 5 years from the date of issue. If your certificate is due to expire, you’ll need to complete the NSW recertification course to receive recertification issued by the NSW Food Authority.

Contact us by phone or email to discuss. Food businesses have 30 working days to ensure their appointed Food Safety Supervisor renews their training and obtains a new Food Safety Supervisor certification.
